Active shooter in the workplace - Grand Blanc Michigan

Everyone always tells me I am crazy for always exercising situational awareness, for sitting in the back row of theaters, for asking to have a corner seat when I go out to eat so I can watch the exits, for owning firearms, for owning personal armor.

My friend "S" works at the Grand Oak Apartments in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Tuesday she is sitting at work, a disgruntled individual walked into her leasing office and began firing shots. At the time of writing this post one of her employees is dead and another, 8 months pregnant, is in critical condition. By some freak chance, my friend was not shot. The active shooter never looked into my friend's office.

Around 3:30pm an active shooter began opening fire. Tamara Johnson, 45, suffered fatal wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital. 20 year old, 8-month pregnant, Lyric Work is currently on life-support however her baby was successfully delivered and is healthy and well. Sadly Lyric has shown no signs of brain activity and is almost certain to become an organ donor, if she hasn't already at the time of writing this.

You ask: Ryan, why are you telling us about this, what can we do about it? While in this situation there likely wasn't a lot that could be done, it was completely unexpected. I've never been up to Michigan to visit her since she moved there so I have no idea how the office is laid out. For all I know the leasing agents were sitting in an entry room and didn't have a chance to react. However, most places of employment are large enough and spread out enough that you could have a chance to react. I would like to recommend a few things that could increase your chances of surviving a workplace/business shooting

  • Always be aware of where exits are

  • Do not hesitate, you will likely be shocked but you have to move. Move move move.

  • Pay attention to the behavior and demeanor of individuals, whether they are friends or strangers. If something feels off stay calm, collect your thoughts and give the individual your attention. If they do not pose an immediate threat ask if everything is ok, ask if you can help them.

  • At your place of employment communicate with management that a plan should be devised for an emergency evacuation that is NOT a fire, drill.

  • If an active shooting is occurring and you do not feel you can safely get to an exit, barricade yourself in an office/storage closet/etc. Get as much material between you and the door as you can, get yourself behind as much solid material as you can and fold your body up as if you were in the hall in grade school doing a tornado drill. If you remembered to grab your phone call emergency services, remain as calm as you can and share everything you know about the situation including your location.

These things won't always help and statistically, you'll never be in a situation where it is needed but shootings happen. One just happened in S's office and she's someone I've known for roughly 2/3 of my life. You can bet she didn't go to work Tuesday thinking "hey I might get shot at today!"

There are other things you can do. Where legal, and where allowed by your employer, you can have the possibility of: concealed carry, less than lethal options like pepper spray, body armor (not practical in an office, practical for some professions though - repo agents, tow truck drivers, roadside assistance persons etc) and even things like backpacks with level IIIA inserts from companies like AR500 Armor that I personally own products from.

The above image is a backpack that for an extra 55$ (at time of writing) comes with a 9.5” x 13” plate that weighs roughly 10lbs which has a Level III rating (designed to defeat rifle threats up to 7.62x51 M80 NATO Ball (.308 Winchester) at velocities up to 2,780 feet per second and all pistol calibers). You could use this as a normal backpack for 134$ before shipping (at time of writing) that in the event of a shooting where you are you can pick up your backpack and run giving you some vital organ coverage. In the event you have to barricade yourself into a room you would scrunch up to create the smallest profile you could and put the backpack between you and the sound. I don't know about you but 134$ for a little peace of mind is well worth it.

Disclaimer. Check local laws, employer policies etc before carrying any sort of body armor, any type of weapon etc. Be familiar with local self defense laws and receive proper training in any weapon or device you purchase and use. I am in no way responsible for any action you take and the consequences that result because of said action(s).

Columbia, Maryland shopping mall shooting

Earlier today at least one suspect began firing shots in a Columbia, Maryland shoping mall. At this time at least 3 are confirmed dead. Not to cheapen the deaths of the victims but I suspect this mall was a 'gun free zone'. Gun free zones DO NOT WORK, clearly. The media and anti-gun movement are going to try and use this to further support stripping the right to bear arms from sane and upright citizens.

First, I urge everyone to go to http://www.gunfacts.info/ before believing any anti-firearm propaganda.

Second, I'd like to recommend the following books to both firearm owners and those that may have questions or concerns about firearms. Please I urge you to educate yourself before joining the anti-gun movement.

And if this makes you want to start carrying to protect yourself and your family, I urge you to seek proper training in your area as well as reading the book  Gun Laws By State - Reciprocity and Gun Laws Quick Reference Guide - 2014 Edition

Firearms are a huge American business

Lets take a quick look at how big of a business firearms are in America

The U.S. is #1 when it comes to gun ownership in the entire world, with 88.8 firearms per 100 people. In fact, the second country on the list of most gun owners per person is Yemen – at a whopping 40% lower ownership rate than the U.S.

Whatever your politics, guns are one of America’s biggest industries.

One: Manufacturing. Nearly 5.5 million guns are manufactured annually in the United States and 95% of these are sold to Americans. An additional 3.2 million guns are imported to the U.S. from other countries.

Just a reminder that firearms are a huge industry in America... do you anti-gun folks REALLY want to put hard-working Americans out of jobs? I'm pro-gun, I'm pro-job, I'm pro-America.

Awesome pro-gun legislation in Indiana!

House Bill 1473, sponsored by state Representative Jim Lucas (R-69), would allow a person who legally possesses a firearm to keep that firearm stored in a locked trunk of their vehicle, a glove box, or stored out of plain sight in the vehicle while on school property. This would allow parents to park on school property for a meeting with a teacher or principal to do so without the fear of breaking the law. HB 1473 has been referred to the House Committee on Public Policy.

State Representative Sean Eberhart (R-57) has filed pro-hunting legislation,
House Bill 1563, which applies to fish and wildlife matters.  The Hoosier State maintains a rich hunting heritage and HB 1563 would make a few enhancements to Indiana’s wildlife laws.  HB 1563 has been referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources. Sponsored by state Senators Jim Banks (R-17) and Jim Tomes (R-49), Senate Bill 97 prohibits a state agency, including a state-supported college or university, from regulating the possession or transportation of firearms, ammunition, or firearm accessories on land, in buildings and other structures that are owned or leased by the state. Please be advised that SB 97 would not affect prohibited places under federal law. SB 97 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Rules and Legislative Procedure.

Portland Shooting

My commentary on this is a few days late, however I wanted to point out that in the Portland, Oregon mall shooting, again was a gun free zone... and guess what, a bad guy brought a firearm into this idiotic gun free zone and opened up... had law-abiding citizens been allowed by the mall to carry personal protection in the form of a firearm then there is a chance this could have stopped sooner. BANNING FIREARMS IN A PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT, BUSINESS, SCHOOL, HOSPITAL, RELIGIOUS CENTER etc... does NOT stop gun violence. CRIMINALS DON'T CARE ABOUT LAWS BY THEIR NATURE, NOR DO THEY CARE ABOUT YOUR SIGNAGE!

Empire State Building Shooting

Two people were killed and at least eight wounded in a shooting outside New York City's Empire State Building on Friday, creating chaos and shocking tourists and commuters who witnessed the bloody scene outside the tourist attraction.

But it's not what it seems... guy shot former co worker and killed them, police returned fire killed him and injured 8 bystanders. The police did more damage than the active shooter.

A 53-year-old fashion accessories designer, disgruntled over being fired a year ago, shot and killed a 41-year-old former co-worker three times with a .45 caliber handgun on a sidewalk near the landmark building, officials said.

Police returned fire, killing the shooter and wounding several bystanders, all of whom were expected to survive, Mayor Michael Bloomberg told a news conference.

I want to see how gun control handles this. This proves that firearms aren't dangerous, that only the people holding them are. I still support the right to bear arms 100% and I personally believe every household should have at least one firearm and one person confident and trained in it's use.

3 Tips tо Firearms Cleaning

FIRST REMEMBER COLONEL COOPER'S 4 RULES

RULE I: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

RULE II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY

RULE III: KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

RULE IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET

Fоr ѕоmе people, firearms аrе cool, stylish, аnd robust. Hоwеvеr іn reality, thеу саn bе potentially vеrу dangerous tо hаvе аt home. Yоu mау wіѕh tо hаvе оnе fоr personal defense оr simply оut оf thе interest factor, but thіѕ іѕ ѕоmеthіng thаt costs much. Firearms аrе іndееd expensive items, but fоr Federal Firearms License holders, thеѕе аrе аvаіlаblе online аt 30% bеlоw thе retail price. Thіѕ іѕ оnе major privilege thаt FFL license holders hаvе оvеr unlicensed people.

Sіnсе уоu аrе gоіng tо spend а handsome amount оf money іn buying firearm(s); therefore, уоu muѕt bе іn а position tо асtuаllу tаkе care оf thіѕ weapon. Aѕ реr thе type оf firearm уоu purchase, thеrе wіll bе differences іn designs аnd features. In order tо mаkе ѕurе thаt уоu clean іt properly, уоu аrе supposed tо refer thе manufacturer's instructions thаt уоu саn find іn thе owner's manual. However, аѕ general аnd basic requirements, thе fоllоwіng tips саn hеlр уоu а lot.

Remove Powder Residues

Yоu ѕhоuld clean уоur firearm regularly іn order tо remove thе deposits thаt decrease thе firearm's efficiency оf operation. All thе working parts аnd аlѕо thе exterior muѕt bе free оf carbon, brass, lead, copper, оr оthеr metal particles. In case уоu dо nоt remove thе residue, thе firearm іѕ highly lіkеlу tо start malfunctioning аnd wearing оut аhеаd оf time. Besides, metal particles аlѕо rust thе firearm іf nоt removed fоr long. A general cleaning іѕ recommended аftеr еасh use, whеrеаѕ detailed cleaning іѕ tо bе mаdе аt regular intervals.

Oiling аnd Lubrication

Oils аnd lubricants саn bе thought оf аѕ hаvіng nutritious vаluе fоr firearms. Thеіr proper functioning саn bе guaranteed іf thеу аrе regularly lubricated. Metal parts оf firearms tend tо corrode іn thе absence оf lubricants аnd presence оf powder residues. Therefore, оnсе уоu аrе dоnе wіth cleaning thе metal deposits frоm сеrtаіn parts, іt іѕ nоw time tо apply oil аnd lubricants аll оvеr metal components.

Apply Grease

Grease іѕ muсh mоrе viscous thаn oil. Whіlе oil саn bе bеѕt fоr metal components, grease іѕ preferred fоr sliding parts оf thе firearm. Thіѕ іѕ rаthеr а nеw finding, whісh іѕ nоt rеаllу practiced асrоѕѕ firearms owners. However, gunsmiths recommend greasing thе sliding parts tо protect thеm frоm harmful environmental exposure. Sіnсе sliding parts move bасk аnd forth, thеу can't hold oil fоr long; thus, grease tеndѕ tо bе comparatively mоrе effective.

Sіnсе уоu аrе gоіng tо spend а handsome amount оf money іn buying firearm(s); therefore, уоu muѕt bе іn а position tо асtuаllу tаkе care оf thіѕ weapon.
