Electricity Storage: Can It Work?

I'm interested in developing battery technologies, they have some cool paper batteries they are working on that really spark my interest. How long until we have batteries like the cells the terminators used? When you can drive across the country in your electric car without recharging?

Here's how it works. A major problem with wind power is that, well, the wind doesn't constantly blow. When it stops, the sudden drop in electricity can cause the grid to flicker and pop. Moreover, wind blows more at night, when lots of power isn't needed, and much of it is wasted. The solution: Save the energy in giant storage systems and have it ready whenever needed." Pentagon stumped by apparent missile launch off U.S. coast

"The Pentagon says it's trying to figure out whether a missile was launched off the coast of southern California and who might have launched it.

Officials with the navy, air force, Defence Department and North American Aerospace Defence Command say they are looking into a video posted on the website of Southern California television station KFMB.

The video appears to show a rocket or some other object shooting up into the sky and leaving a large contrail over the Pacific Ocean.

Pentagon spokesman Colonel Dave Lapan said Tuesday that officials can't confirm that there was a launch and if there was, by whom. He says officials are talking to civilian and defence authorities who control and monitor air space."

Mystery Solved? Missile Launch Could Be a Jet Contrail

"A video that appears to show a missile launch off the coast of California is so far "unexplained" by anyone in the military, a Pentagon spokesman told reporters Tuesday -- but what seems mysterious could be nothing more than an airplane.

Federal officials do not consider the event a threat. And they aren't the only ones.

According to a post on ContrailScience.com, the visible exhaust from a jet engine, a trail of condensed water vapor called a contrail, resembles a missile trail when seen from some angles. "

Witness report: we were driving home from the gas satation and my grandfather noticed a group of lights in the sky that appeared still. i got my phone out and took a video as it got closer. it then appeared to be three lights in the shape of a triangle.

Jet-Powered 'Rocket Man' Flies Loop the Loops

"Swiss adventurer Yves Rossy jumped from a hot-air balloon Friday and completed two aerial loops using just his custom-made jet-propelled wingsuit -- the first time such maneuvers have been performed.

It was just the latest daredevil stunt by the former fighter pilot who hopes one day to fly through the Grand Canyon.

Rossy, 51, launched himself from a replica of the Breitling Orbiter -- the first balloon to be piloted nonstop around the world in 1999 -- at an altitude of 7,874 feet (2,400 meters) near Lake Geneva. FCC warns of looming mobile spectrum crunch

Everytime I turn around, they are freaking out about the spectrum for tv, radio, phones, etc. Maybe in a world where there is little of the spectrum left for use... people will start making better products, and instead of toting around 2-3 devices that are eating up singals (and ip's but don't get me started on that, that's an entirely different gripe of mine) people will start carring 1 and then perhaps we will also see content providers become more efficient when it comes to the size of their data instead of making things bigger and bulkier when it comes to file size.

 

"Can wireless carriers' mobile broadband networks keep pace with the fast-growing demand for mobile data? Maybe not. The Federal Communication Commission predicts a "looming spectrum crunch" in a recently published paper, Mobile Broadband: The Benefits of Additional Spectrum.

According to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, "The explosive growth in mobile communications is outpacing our ability to keep up. If we don't act to update our spectrum policies for the 21st century, we're going to run into a wall -- a spectrum crunch -- that will stifle American innovation and economic growth and cost us the opportunity to lead the world in mobile communications.""
